On a Wednesday afternoon in May, Alyson, one of Dr. Diego's twins, disappears in the presence of the prime suspect in two murders, a third homicide occurring just two days before Alyson and Paolo vanish. Her male companion who is suspected of being a sexual predator specializing in pretty young girls. Alyson meets the criteria in every regard. Lt. Desjardin enlists every available resource to find Dr. Diego's missing daughter. They are surprised to find her living almost half a world away quite happy and in love with her man.

A witness comes forward requesting protection from the Witness Protection Program in exchange for information on the three murders.

Lt. Charles Desjardin is a strong Christian who believes faith is more a matter of living than talking. He holds a very contemporary view of what a Christian should be. He frequently reveals his humanity as he risks his faith for his love for Dr. Diego and his crushing hurt when she ends their relationship. He displays fear, anger and prejudice as he deals with Alyson's disappearance. Charles Desjardin is a normal kind of guy, but knows faith as his guiding strength and hope.
